‘Busted’ for playing Bingo!
A police raid on a bar in Portugal, the Yorkshire Tavern, has resulted in the arrest of 28 British expats and holiday makers aged between 23 and 76.
The 28 arrested have appeared in court in Albufeira on charges of ‘exploitation of illegal gambling, illegal gambling and witnessing illegal gambling’, fined 150 euros (£120) and given a 3 month suspended sentence. Some of those arrested were in the bar watching sport on the tv, a case of in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Whilst gambling in Portugal is illegal and organisers of bingo require a government licence, the top prize in this ‘illegal bingo’ game being held for fun was a tin of biscuits.
Acting on an anonymous tip off the bar was put under surveillance by the police before being raided. The bingo cards, marker pens and tin of biscuits were seized with the ‘gamblers’ and those present in the bar before being taken in 3 police vans to a police station where they were held and questioned for 4 hours before being fined, cautioned and released.
