Tomorrow is polling day, the day the country decides, and by the time many read this there will be a ‘new’ government and possibly a ‘new’ Prime Minister.
The Election Campaign has almost run its course and for weeks there has been a daily helping of ‘sound bites’ as the press and television commentators follow the Party Campaigns criss crossing the country. For the first time there have been a series of ‘Leadership Debates’ where the main political parties have almost gone head to head. Are we now any the wiser for it all or even better informed?
A brief dictionary definition of politics says: “winning and using of power to govern society”. Look up the word ‘politic’ in a Synonym Finder and it says: “sagacious, judicious, wise…….clever, cunning, wily, tricky, Machiavellian……conniving, contriving, intriguing…to one’s best interest, all to the good, correct, right, good, intelligent. Finally under ‘politician’ it says: “public servant, office seeker, lame duck, wirepuller”. All in all, an interesting choice of words don’t you think!
The point I am trying to make is simply this. Our country is in an unprecedented economic mess. Public services could be better, law and order, education, health, welfare etc. I am sure all could be ‘managed’ more efficiently and improved. Everyone knows there is no magic elixir or overnight solution to our problems and no one looks to living in Utopia.
However, is it not time for politicians of all parties to stand up, take one step forward and be counted. Restore the public’s faith in you, put aside your squabbling and mendacious spin and treat your electorate with due respect. Credit us with intelligence, afford us the truth and answer our questions. After all you are our servants, not our masters.
All I want to see on May 6th is a new Government of men and women, regardless of political persuasion, who will promise to resolve our present predicament and strive to take this country of ours forward. Slay this present political beast you have created.
