The Daily Mail’s campaign to ‘Spring clean for the Queen’ is very laudable indeed but what a shame there are so many people out there prepared to litter and foul this green and pleasant land in the first place. And what is worst many foul the streets without the slightest inkling they are doing so. I refer to the smokers and gum chewers.
Smoke and chew gum by all means but why should I have to tolerate your leftovers. Walk down any street and you see their debris and detritus. It’s everywhere you go. Cigarette ends scattered like confetti on the streets, in the gutters and doorways, paving slabs dappled grey and white from gum as if pock-marked by some strange contagious disease. Pack it in you inconsiderate morons, stop flicking and spitting it away. It really is LITTER, not some exempt matter or ambrosial nectar for sharing!
Finally a fact: 30 million tonnes of litter is picked up off our streets every year costing council tax payers £858 million a year. At £80 a toss for those who think fags and gum don’t constitute litter isn’t it time there were a few more convictions?
