Yes, tomorrow the Olympic Flame is coming to town. Borne aloft by a relay of torch bearers on its 70 day 8,000 mile journey around the United Kingdom and I shall be part of the throng lining the route to cheer it on its way.
I knew the flame with its origins in ancient Greece represented the theft of fire from Zeus by Prometheus, but I didn’t know the modern origins of the torch relay. Purporting to represent ancient Greek tradition the original games did not include any torch bearing ritual procession of the flame. The torch relay was actually the idea of Carl Diem, the chief architect of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and seized upon by Goebbels to promote Germany’s standing in the world and highlight the opening of the Games.
Before the opening ceremony in London on 27 July the Torch Relay will have passed through more than 1,000 communities, travelled along highways and byways, taken in hundreds of famous landmarks and carried by varying methods of transport including horseback, tram, car, boat and steam train..
Photographs to follow. I hope tomorrow’s a bright and sunny day and not too windy!
